Beneath The Hour
okay lowkey this might not be a pg13 game with these dark stuff, but feel free to disqualify me for that if its too crazy. Mainly used this ZotJam to learn some Unity VFX/Shader Graphs!
the dichotomy between rest and ambition — between the desire to sleep and the intrusive pressure to be productive. The player begins in a peaceful classroom, yearning for rest. But soon, they're overwhelmed by words like “AMBITION” and “WORTHLESS” — battling internal conflict through simple, frantic minigames. The experience visually and interactively represents two opposing forces: calm vs. chaos, rest vs. pressure, day vs. night, and mind vs. body.
The game highlights the silent struggles people face daily — like burnout, pressure, and self-worth — experiences that are rarely acknowledged or spoken aloud. By forcing the player to fight off words like “WORTHLESS” or “AMBITION,” it reflects the unsung internal battles many face behind calm exteriors.
This game went entirely out of scope but I mainly used this quarters ZotJam to force myself to learn more about VFX and Blender -> Unity workflow pipeline. I learned a lot regarding the visual scripting side of visuals and it took me a while to make the fire effect but I think it looked great. Besides the skeleton and school assets (which didn't render properly in URP since its outdated), I made the main night scene entirely myself and I was able to tinker with shaders and how they worked, especially with outlines.
But I'll be continuing on developing this concept throughout this year!! I hope it wasn't too weird or uncomfortable. Had to rush a lot of things so the ideas are everywhere.
